As a research-intensive university, HKU fosters the ideal conditions and environment to attract and retain distinguished local and overseas scholars. HKU has launched a number of research facilities in Hong Kong and the Mainland, and will continue to leverage these advanced facilities to create greater impact.

Academicians
The Academician is the highest and most prestigious academic title bestowed in sciences and engineering in the nation. Among all UGC-funded institutions, HKU is home to the highest number of members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), with a total of 16 CAS members since 1995 and four CAE members since 1997.
State Key Laboratory
State Key Laboratories (SKL) have been launched since 1984 to support advancements in basic and applied fundamental research. The primary mission of SKL is to focus innovative research on the frontiers of education, national economy, social development and national security. With the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology, five State Key Laboratories have been set up.
Chinese Academy of Sciences - HKU Joint Laboratories
To drive forward research development, HKU has established join laboratories with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). This collaboration integrates talents and resources from both Hong Kong and the Mainland, facilitating extensive collaborative research across various fields.

Research & Innovation in the Mainland
HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Academy (TEA)
The HKU TEA in Shenzhen Qianhai, a collaborative initiative between HKU and the Qianhai Authority established since September 2024, aims to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area. The Academy, located in the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub, serves as a hub for startups in cutting-edge fields.
With support from the Qianhai Government, the Academy aims to drive technological breakthroughs and entrepreneurial success by providing resources, mentorship, and investment opportunities. Through partnerships with industry experts and investors, TEA seeks to empower aspiring entrepreneurs and contribute to economic growth in the region.
Shenzhen Institute of Research and Innovation (HKU-SIRI)
HKU-SIRI was established in March 2011. Founded on the strength of our distinguished faculties and scientific and technological resources, HKU-SIRI aims to pioneer cutting-edge research, promote innovation and development, and support advanced scientific achievements.
HKU-SIRI is committed to promoting high-tech knowledge transfer and industry incubation, introducing key laboratories, research centres and cultivating interdisciplinary research talent to further strengthen the partnerships in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and across the nation’s industries.
Zhejiang Institute of Research and Innovation (HKU-ZIRI)
HKU-ZIRI is a strategic initiative aimed at establishing a research-led, innovation-driven institute to foster closer ties between HKU and local Zhejiang enterprises since its establishment in December 2012. HKU-ZIRI provides a platform for translational research and collaboration with the tech industry under five strategic themes, namely smart materials, alternative energy, sustainable energy, biomedical interfaces, and advanced manufacturing.
As a major research institute in Chinese Mainland, HKU-ZIRI is committed to collaborating with leading universities and tech firms to develop innovative solutions, attract scientific talent, and engage in advanced research and development.
HKU Caohejing Base
HKU has launched the Caohejing Base at Shanghai’s Caohejing Hi-Tech Oasis, home to HKU interdisciplinary research institutes. The base fully leverages the Caohejing Development Zone’s distinctive strengths in science and technology innovation.
Focused on cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, it drives the industrial transformation of scientific achievements, attracts world-class research teams, and cultivates a comprehensive ecosystem—from innovation at its source to industrial application.
